High School admission For non-native Speakers of English

Students who wish admission to CAISL’s High School but who are not yet academically fluent in English may be admitted under the following conditions:

Grades 11 and 12:  CAISL requires all students who enter in Grades 11 or 12 to be fluent (or close to it) in English.   Students wishing entrance into Grade 11 or 12 must demonstrate through CAISL testing prior to admission their ability to work in an academic program where English is the medium of instruction in all courses.

Grade 10: To enter Grade 10, a student must demonstrate an advanced level of English academic ability, at minimum, as determined by CAISL’s admissions testing.  Based on this test and on the student's academic history, the CAISL Admission Team and the English Language Coordinator must have confidence that one year of intensive instruction in English will allow the student to progress to 11th Grade with an appropriate level of English fluency.

Grade 9: Full Year (September through June): Students may be admitted to Grade 9 for the start of school in September if they already have basic familiarity with English in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  To enter Grade 9, a student must demonstrate an intermediate level of English academic ability, at minimum, as determined by CAISL’s admissions testing.  Based on this test and on the student's academic history, the CAISL Admission Team and the English Language Coordinator must have confidence that two years (Grades 9 and 10) of intensive instruction in English will allow the student to progress to 11th Grade with an appropriate level of English fluency.

Entry mid-way through 9th or 10th Grades:  Students may be admitted mid-way through 9th or 10th but because the time they would be able to spend in intensive instruction in English would be reduced, the expectation of English fluency, as determined by admissions testing and historic records, is higher.

Entry to Grade 8:  Students may enter Grade 8 with little or no prior experience of English and without admissions testing if they will start classes in September.   Students who wish to enter Grade 8 after the school year has started will take an admissions test to ensure that they have acquired at minimum an appropriate level of English and will be able to enter Grade 9 the next year.
