Admissions / FAQS / External Testing

Does CAISL use external tests for students?

There are five types of external tests which are used at CAISL. Some are required (MAP TM and PSAT-Preliminary SAT) while others are optional.

MAP Tests

CAISL uses MAP™ tests (MAP stands for Measures of Academic Progress) for students in Grades 2-10. MAP tests were developed by the Northwest Evaluation. MAP is a computer-adaptive test which diagnoses students' strengths and challenges to assist teachers in individualizing instruction. We encourage you to learn more about MAP tests by visiting their website at www.nwea.org

Preliminary SAT Tests

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is mandatory for all students in grades 10 and 11.

This test serves a variety of purposes.  Students receive a list of recommended post-secondary areas of study based on the information they provide.  Taking the PSAT is the first official step towards applying to U.S. universities as it registers students with the College Board application programs.  Additionally, it helps prepare students for the SAT, which is useful for the U.S., Portuguese and U.K. university systems.

IB Tests for the IB Diploma and Certificates

CAISL' s International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB) is a comprehensive and rigorous two-year curriculum, leading to external examinations, for students in grades 11 and 12. Based on the pattern of no particular country, it is a deliberate compromise between specialization required in some national systems and the breadth preferred in others. This is an optional program of studies.

More information on the IB and IB World Schools can be found by clicking The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB).

SAT and ACT Tests

SAT and ACT Tests are administered at CAISL. Registration and payment for both the SAT and ACT tests have to be done online. Please consult this link to get all necessary information.

SAT Tests

SAT I: Reasoning Test. This is required for admissions to many U.S. colleges and universities. Students usually take this test for the first time in grade 11. Most students retake the test in their senior year.

SAT II: Subject Tests. Strong results in these subject specific tests can result in advanced placement in such subjects in colleges and universities. Students planning to take SAT II tests should inform the guidance office well in advance of the test, as a good performance is dependent on an in-depth preparation. This test also replaces Portuguese "provas" in some subjects for students earning the American High School Diploma.

ACT Tests

The ACT test is an entrance exam required by some universities in the United States and is administrated at CAISL.

The ACT (No Writing) consists of four multiple-choice tests: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. The ACT Plus Writing includes the four multiple-choice tests and a Writing Test.
