What is the language of instruction?

English is the language of instruction in all classes except Portuguese (for fluent speakers and as a foreign language) and in French, Spanish, and Chinese as foreign languages.

Is there an extra charge for the “Foundations of English Classes” for students still learning English?

No, there is not an extra fee. One of CAISL ’s goals is to serve a multi-lingual student body. Thus, some of our students will come to us needing specialized instruction in English. CAISL’s “Foundations of English Classes” program is designed to teach students to become academically competent in English and is taught by specialist teachers. The amount of time students spend in these classes is based on the needs of the individual. Students may be admitted to CAISL up to and including the beginning of Grade 8 with no prior knowledge of English, at the school's discretion.

My child is a native Portuguese speaker. How will his/her Portuguese language and culture be developed at CAISL?

Native Portuguese speakers study Portuguese as a native/fluent language (Língua Portuguesa) and follow the Ministry of Education curriculum for Portuguese language. Portuguese culture is integrated into the curriculum. In Grades 11 and 12, Portuguese as a native language may be studied as a part of the IB Diploma Program.

What are the foreign language options at CAISL?

All CAISL students up to and including Grade 9 study Portuguese, as either a native/fluent language (Língua Portuguesa) or as a foreign language (PFL).

Beginning in Grade 7, students may add French, Spanish or Chinese to their language study in addition to Portuguese and English.

English, Portuguese, French, Spanish, and Chinese are offered at the IB level as well. By special arrangement, students may take other world languages for the IB.
