Is there Bus Service?

CAISL provides an extensive bus service to most of the metropolitan Lisbon area.  Our bus service includes both large, 50-seater buses serving those areas where a lot of students live in close proximity, as well as small 8 and 14-seat vans for students living in more isolated areas. While our bus service is extensive, our buses are not able to accommodate all areas. Be sure to check with the Accounts or the Admissions Offices. There is an extra charge for the bus service.

Students are picked up at their door whenever possible. Every effort is to keep the bus ride as short as possible, and usually in less than one hour. While it seems like a long way for a child to ride from Lisbon to CAISL, remember that traffic is flowing in the opposite direction- to Lisbon in the morning when the bus is coming to school and towards Sintra in the afternoon when the bus is going to Lisbon.

All of our buses have individual seat belts and adult monitors to ensure the safety of the students.

Additionally, there is a "Schedule 2" bus which leaves campus at 5.00 p.m. for students from EC3 to Grade 5 who choose to participate in extra-curricular activities. Parents may choose which days of the week they would like to use the "Schedule 2" bus, and this bus may also be taken by older students and paid for as an "occasional rider" on a space-available basis.

A free Activity Bus is available for students in Grades 6-12. Therefore, students who participate in organized activities such as sports, music, drama or other school sponsored activities, may sign up for this bus which usually leaves at 5:50 p.m. Students must sign up for the bus by 1:00 p.m. on the CAISL Moodle site. There is a limited service (students are not dropped off at their homes, but are taken from CAISL and dropped off in groups at pre-defined points, usually train or bus stations.)

And how about lunch?

Each student has the option of having a school lunch or bringing a lunch from home.

School Lunch:   The menu for each quarter can be found on the school web site and is posted before the quarter starts. For students in Grades 1 through 12, there are 3 choices of a main dish every day: meat, fish, and a vegetarian dish.   For Early Childhood 3, 4, and 5-Year-Olds, the daily meal is a healthy choice that has proven popular with young children. However, if it is not a dish that your child will eat happily, there are two alternative dishes available. Please contact the Accounts Office no later than 1 day in advance if that is your case.

Lunch Costs: Lunch Service may be invoiced Yearly or Quarterly.   This cost is significantly less expensive than Individual Lunch Tickets.   Secondary students with quarterly lunches will have this marked on their Student Identification Cards, which must be shown daily as they go through the lunch line.

For those who have paid for Yearly or Quarterly Lunches, no refunds are given for absence in the case of illness or other reasons, except when the absence is a result of an illness or school trip lasting 5 or more consecutive school days.  Illness must be verified by a doctor's note.

Individual Lunch Ticket  Students who want school lunch some days and home lunch on others, can buy Individual Lunch Tickets to use on the days they wish.   Individual Lunch Tickets may be requested by the parents of Early Childhood and Elementary from Ms. Ana Maria Gorito in the Elementary Office, and will be invoiced to the families at the end of the month.   Secondary students (Grades 6 through 12) may purchase Individual Lunch Tickets with cash in the Business Office. Invoice/receipt of the purchase will be sent on the same day, to parents, via email.

Lunch from Home:   For Early Childhood students, home lunches are taken from the classrooms each morning and kept in an appropriate place. We ask that all lunch boxes and bags be clearly marked with the student’s name so that they can be easily distributed at lunch time. Assistance is provided for children needing to have their lunch heated in a microwave oven. For 1st through 12th Grades, students who wish to bring lunches from home, may heat them in microwaves in the cafeteria.   Note that there is no place for students to keep their lunch refrigerated during the morning.

I work and there is no one at home to care for my child after school. Can the school help?

CAISL provides After Hours care for Early Childhood through 2nd Grade and a Homework Clinic for Grades 3 through 6 without charge, but with a requirement for advance booking.

What are the costs of the school bus, lunches and after school care?

All these optional costs are listed on the current fee schedule, which can be found here.
