IMUN XXV Conference
Posted 11/11/2019 12:42PM

The 25th conference of the Iberian Model United Nations (IMUN) brought together a record number of participants, with about 500 students involved from 27 different schools from France, Italy, Kenya, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Spain, and United Kingdom.

This year's guest speaker was Ms. Myroslava Gongadze, Chief at Voice of America's Ukrainian Service, who spoke to the students about how important freedom of expression is, particularly in journalism, and how it should be kept through their generation.

The question of ensuring security and freedom of expression in journalism was one of the issues in the General Assembly (GA) agenda, but students in this conference also debated the question of the ongoing effects of imperialism on post-colonial nations, the question of equitable representation and increase in the membership of the UN Security Council and the question of maintaining cultural values amidst the integration of migrants. There was also a Special Conference to debate the question of protecting individual privacy from government surveillance programs, the question of the role of ecotourism in the promotion of economic and environmental sustainability, the question of allocating essential resources in regard to overpopulation, and the question of the ethical implications of genetic modifications. IMUN also included the Security Council and the International Court of Justice models.

After three days of conference, all participating students, whether delegates, press members, or even working as admin staff for this event, certainly left having acquired communication and negotiation skills, and building a sense of what global cooperation can do to help solve today's world issues.
