On September 20th, CAISL High School students were out of campus for two knowledge and fun packed activities.
Grades 9 and 10 departed CAISL early morning under threatening skies. Students poured over maps and carefully examined the 60-plus questions relating to the culture of Lisbon on the bus ride in. Under clearing skies some 23 groups of five students and one teacher finally arrived in Lisbon and set out to immerse themselves in the rich and varied culture of Portugal. Students entered small historic shops, examined noteworthy art, climbed to the top of Torre de Belém, explored numerous sites including the Jerónimos Cloisters, the Museu dos Coches, Museu de Dinheiro, the winding streets of the Alfama and finally the Baixa. Each question had a point value and the two groups that accumulated the most points were the winners – a great time was had by all!
Grade 11 and 12 students had an information-packed college workshop day. After this session, some of the students traveled into Lisbon at the end of the school day to view the Banksy: Genius or Vandal exhibit at the Cordoaria Nacional. The visit allowed students to further their understanding of questions such as what defines art, the role of artists in society, whether there is a danger in stating that anything can be art and public space use. Students found the exhibit extremely thought provoking and genuinely enjoyed themselves. Students were able to incorporate many of their observations into their academic class, particularly Theory of Knowledge.
