XXIV IMUN Conference
Posted 11/20/2018 05:56PM

The XXIV Iberian Model United Nations took place between November 8 and 10, bringing together more than 400 student delegates from schools in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Romania, Ireland, Turkey, Egypt, Norway and Senegal.

This year's keynote speaker, Mrs. Nandini Singla, Ambassador of India to Portugal, talked to the students about her experience in the United Nations and revealed a little bit more of the reality of a delegates' work to the students.

Under the general theme of Human Rights, the delegates in the General Assembly focused on the question of human population planning and ensuring basic human rights to a growing world; the promotion and protection of the right for identity and belief self-determination for the youth in less economically developed countries; the management of conflict zones and border control to alleviate the responsibility of refugees on the developing world; and endorsing youth participation in national decision-making through the electoral cycle. At the same time, delegates in the special conference debated the rise of authoritarian nationalism, the use of enhanced interrogation as a means to protect national security, the role of media in building democracy and measures to increase cooperation between States and Non-Governmental Organizations. Delegates in the Security Council discussed the situations in Venezuela, Yemen and Donetsk and Luhansk. Besides the conferences, this year students had the chance to participate in the International Court of Justice module.

All participants are to be congratulated for this successful conference.
