In 2018 CAISL sent 21 students off to The Netherlands to participate in the 50th anniversary of The Hague International Model United Nations. Eighteen of our students comprised the Russian Federation delegation while senior Sofia F. L. played a key leadership role as Deputy Secretary General, junior Davina S. chaired the Historical Security Council and António B. acted as a judge on the International Court of Justice. The Russian Federation, a P-5 Security Council member, was effectively represented by João Pedro Z. and Vasco G.
The group departed very early Friday morning, January 26, for Amsterdam where we spent the weekend participating in workshops and tours at the Anne Frank House, Dutch Resistance Museum, the Rijks, Stedelijk, and Van Gogh museums, and enjoying a canal boat tour of the city. On Sunday we traveled to The Hague where we spent the afternoon preparing for the conference which started bright and early Monday morning. A highlight of the week was our visit to the Russian Embassy in The Hague where a Russian political officer provided us with an overview of Russia's role in world affairs today and then fielded questions from our delegates. We then enjoyed a delicious typical Russian meal at a nearby restaurant. Another highlight of the conference was the presence of King Willem-Alexander at the opening ceremony and Princess Mabel who spoke powerfully on the topic of child brides.
The eight days were packed with enriching cultural activities, politics, debates and making new friends. Our tired but satisfied group returned to Lisbon late Friday evening, February 2, with the weekend to recuperate and catch up on studies.
