Carlucci American International School of Lisbon

Beyond the Classroom

At CAISL, some of the most powerful learning happens beyond the classroom. Whether students are exploring the outdoors, leading a club, serving the community, or traveling internationally, these experiences spark curiosity, build independence, and bring learning to life.

Fieldtrips

Day trips provide students with a different learning day and a chance to connect to their colleagues and teachers in a different environment. We take advantage of the rich natural, cultural, and historical environment of the Lisbon area to provide age appropriate and curriculum fitting trips. Examples include visiting a farm with Early Childhood and Elementary, visiting historical sites that show how Portugal changed over the year, connecting with new classmates over a scavenger hunt in the center of Lisbon, or even going for an adventure in the Sintra forest that includes tree climbing, hiking, and much more.

Outdoor Learning

Led by a specialist science teacher, outdoor learning takes Elementary students on exploration trips inside or outside the school. Whether it is planting in our garden, observing the cycle of the oak tree in front of school, going into the mountain to remove invasive species, or even learning organic farming and traditional bread making, these hands on learning experiences leave a lasting impression on students and enhance their connection to the environment.

Ecolution Club

Ecolution started as a student led and teacher supervised initiative, but it grew to include Upper Elementary students and to becoming a cornerstone of our school. The club's aim is to raise awareness to environmental issues and encourage action, communication and collection of data, through the implementation of eco-friendly habits on the CAISL community.

Club members participate in local actions like "Adopt a Forest" and "Plastic Pirates", taking their action beyond school walls. In recognition of their great work, CAISL was awarded the "Eco-Escolas" green flag, a government initiative to recognize educational institutions' efforts for a better world.

Community Service

The Elementary and Secondary Community Service Clubs meet regularly to design and lead initiatives in partnership with the organizations they support. These initiatives range from creative fundraising efforts—such as bake sales and seasonal Celebration Grams—to hands-on participation in community projects, including Banco Alimentar food drives and house-rebuilding programs with Associação DOMUS for students in Grades 11 and 12.

Both Elementary and Secondary students also build meaningful relationships within the local community, including visits to an elderly home and day center, where they connect with older citizens and bring warmth, companionship, and joy to everyday moments.

Library

CAISL is home to two welcoming libraries, thoughtfully designed to support students at different stages of their learning journey. The Early Childhood–Grade 2 Library offers a warm, inviting space tailored to young readers, while the Main Library serves students from Grades 3 through 12. Together, they form the largest English-language school library collection in Portugal.

Families are also invited to check out books and participate in activities organized by the Library Media Center.

Technology

Technology at CAISL is integrated across all areas of the curriculum. From Early Childhood onward, students develop age-appropriate digital skills, including coding and robotics, while using technology to enhance learning in all subjects. Recent examples, such as using Virtual Reality in Math to tackle real-life problem-solving challenges, show how students apply technology in creative and meaningful ways.

As part of our commitment to responsible innovation, CAISL thoughtfully integrates artificial intelligence into learning. Flint AI, a secure, education-focused platform, helps students explore AI ethically and effectively, without using student data for training purposes.

Model United Nations

The Model United Nations (MUN) program at CAISL gives students the chance to explore global issues, develop public speaking and negotiation skills, and think like diplomats. Middle School students take part in a one-day conference at CAISL with other local international schools, while Grade 5 students get their first taste of MUN as part of the press team. In High School, participation is optional and offers students the opportunity to grow as delegates or take on leadership roles such as Secretary General or chairing debates.

International Experiences

CAISL offers Secondary students a range of international experiences that extend learning beyond borders. From curricular travel and academic competitions to artistic collaboration, these opportunities connect classroom learning to real-world contexts.

Middle School students participate annually in Week Without Walls, traveling to explore historical, cultural, and scientific sites that deepen their understanding through hands-on experience.

Students in Middle and High School elective programs—such as Choir, Orchestra, Drama, and Robotics—also take part in international collaborations, performances, competitions, and festivals, including the ISTA Theater Festival for High School Drama students. Varsity teams also travel frequently for European tournaments.

Student Led Clubs and After-School Activities

CAISL offers a wide range of after-school activities that allow students to explore their interests beyond the school day. Led by teachers or external partners these clubs provide a relaxed environment where learning continues through curiosity, creativity, and connection.

In Middle and High School, students are encouraged to take the lead by creating lunchtime clubs with the guidance of a teacher. From debate and science to technology, chess, and more, these student-led groups foster leadership, collaboration, and a strong sense of belonging among peers who share common interests.

EC3 Students Enjoy Outdoor Learning Experience

Earlier today, EC3 students enjoyed an outdoor learning experience where they planted lettuces and explored nature through hands-on activities. The students had a wonderful time, and special thanks go to Mr. Rocha for his support. 🌱

Earlier today, our EC3 students took part in a wonderful outdoor learning activity. During their visit, they had the opportunity to plant lettuce and learn more about nature and gardening.

The students were very excited to get their hands in the soil and take part in this hands-on experience. It was a joyful moment for everyone and a great way to connect learning with the outdoors.

A special thank you to Mr. Rocha for his support and for helping make this activity possible. 🌱

Grade 7 scientists took learning outdoors 🌿

Grade 7 students investigated photosynthesis beside a cork oak tree, using scientific models to understand how matter transforms and supports plant growth, bringing classroom science into a real-world setting.

Grade 7 scientists took their learning outdoors to investigate photosynthesis beside a cork oak tree.

They explored our unit’s guiding question: How does an acorn gain mass as it grows into an oak tree?

Using models of reactants and products, students discovered how carbon dioxide and water transform into matter that is stored in living systems—bringing science to life through one of Portugal’s most iconic trees.

CAISL Students Shine at Interschool Debate Tournament

CAISL High School Debate Society students demonstrated exceptional critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills at a recent interschool debate tournament, earning top placements across multiple grade levels.

Twelve members of the CAISL High School Debate Society represented the school at the third Interschool Debate Tournament at TASIS. Students competed in three rounds, where each team was judged on the strength of their arguments and their ability to respond to opposing teams.

CAISL students earned impressive results, with tenth graders Anderson F. and Rodrigo M. placing first, and ninth graders Luisa F. and Sam G. placing second. The CAISL Debate Society is a student-run club that began last school year and meets weekly during lunch.
