One Curriculum, Two Diplomas

CAISL is the only international school in Portugal which offers the American High School diploma. We combine long-standing American educational traditions with current best practices in curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

A Recognized American Education

CAISL is supported by the US Department of State's Office of Overseas Schools and works closely with its Regional Education Officer (REO), who maintains regular contact and conducts on-site visits to ensure the school provides a high-quality American educational program aligned with other American schools worldwide.

The school also participates in the American Education Reaches Out (AERO) program, which connects American international schools globally and provides guidance in curriculum development, standards-based learning, and assessment. Through AERO resources, workshops, and professional consultations, CAISL maintains a consistent, exemplar curriculum and strong instructional practices.

The American High School Diploma

All CAISL students follow a course of study leading to the American High School Diploma, assessed on a 4.33 GPA scale. This diploma enables graduates to pursue university studies in the USA and around the world.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma

In addition to earning the American High School Diploma, students have the option to simultaneously pursue the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, which is scored out of a maximum of 45 points. Doing so grants students not one, but two diplomas: the American High School Diploma and the IB Diploma.

CAISL has been an IB World School, offering the IB Diploma Programme, since 2002.

2025 IB Results

AVERAGE (MEAN) SCORE | CAISL’s average score was 34.3 points, significantly above the global average of 30.58 points.

PASS RATE | CAISL achieved a 98% pass rate, compared with the global pass rate of 81.26%.

BILINGUAL DIPLOMAS | 45.6% of our students were awarded the Bilingual Diploma, demonstrating successful completion of coursework in two first languages.

SAT Exams

The SAT is a standardized college entrance examination required for students applying to universities in the United States.

For CAISL graduates earning the American High School Diploma, SAT results may also substitute for the Portuguese “provas” for university access.

Nationally Representative Sample Percentiles are derived from a research study of U.S. students in Grades 11 and 12 and are weighted to reflect all U.S. students in those grades, regardless of whether they typically take the SAT.

MAP Results

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) is an assessment program developed by the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) in the United States.

MAP measures student achievement and academic growth, providing detailed information to teachers and parents about each student’s strengths and areas for improvement in Reading, English Language Usage, and Mathematics. Learn more about this testing and how to read results here.

CAISL students in Grades 2 through 10 take the MAP assessment twice each year, in the Fall and Spring.

Each year, NWEA publishes international comparison data showing MAP scores by world region and by type of school. To evaluate the effectiveness of its English and Mathematics programs, CAISL compares its results with the NWEA reference groups:

The graphs illustrate that CAISL’s average scores are consistently above those of the comparison groups and, on occasion, are only marginally exceeded by the Office of Overseas Schools average.

Our Co-Curriculars & Learning Opportunities

A child’s growth depends on becoming healthy and confident — independent, yet able to collaborate within a supportive community. It means learning to lead, choosing positive role models, and developing a lifelong love of learning.

At CAISL, students are encouraged to explore their interests both during and beyond the school day. They may join established activities or even create their own clubs with the guidance of teachers. Offerings range from Science and Community Service to Leadership, Debate, and more — evolving each year in response to student passions and initiative.

Model United Nations is a longstanding tradition at CAISL. Each year, our students organize the Iberian Model UN (IMUN), taking responsibility for every aspect of planning and hosting the conference. This group also leads our UN Peace Day celebrations, fostering awareness of the importance of international cooperation and dialogue.

Throughout the year, students participate in age-appropriate trips and experiential learning opportunities beyond the classroom. From community service projects to outdoor education programs, these experiences enrich our curriculum and deepen student learning in meaningful and lasting ways.

Students have individual or shared access to school-provided laptops, along with robotics and coding tools, a comprehensive library with print and digital resources, and specialized equipment for Music, Art, Drama, and Athletics. Our Post-Secondary Counseling

CAISL follows a “best-fit” approach to university counseling, supporting a student-driven and parent-informed decision-making process. Through careful research and self-reflection, students explore institutions that align with their values, interests, and strengths. Our goal is to ensure a smooth transition from the CAISL community to each student’s next learning environment.

Through one-on-one meetings, group information sessions, and close collaboration with families, we help students understand their options and identify what they want from the next stage of their educational journey so they can achieve their best personal and academic outcomes.
