The Science of Sound

CAISL students had the opportunity to learn about the “Science of Sound” through hands-on activities which connected the musical properties of marimbas with the principles of Physics. Many of you have seen our marimbas played at Elementary concerts and other events. The marimbas were built by Mr. Tom Bourne out of locally available wood when he visited CAISL eight years ago. He came back this year to do some maintenance on the instruments. During his visit, he helped students explore how the materials, dimensions and construction of musical instruments can impact notes, tone, pitch and resonance.
