Outdoor Learning and Scientific Approaches to Weather Patterns

On the follow-up to CAISL’s Outdoor Learning Program, fifth-grade Outdoor Learning classes explored scientific approaches to weather patterns, taking ambitious fifth-grade NGSS performance expectations outdoors. Using specialized tools such as decibel meters, anemometers, thermometers, and rain gauges, students learned that everyday weather patterns can be measured, represented graphically, discussed, and even predicted. Concepts like the x- and y-axes are now part of their basic knowledge, and the barriers between science and technology are beginning to fade—another strong example of STEAM learning in action.
