Middle School Art: On Chinese Landscape Painting
In this project, middle school students explored the rich tradition of Chinese Landscape painting from the Song and Yuan Dynasties. Students explored first the art of handwriting, and typeface design, then experimented with Chinese calligraphy, before learning about the traditions and conventions of Chinese landscape painting and how it differs from European landscape painting in its focus on landscape as a metaphor for inner feelings instead of as a realistic representation of what you see. Finally, students composed their own original poems and created their own seal stamps to stamp their (and their friends) artworks.
