This month students from the High School Art, and IB & Advanced Art classes visited the Centro Cultural de Belem, whose exhibitions provided a broad survey of Modern and Contemporary Art, as well as the exhibition Avenida 211, that focused on Lisbon-based contemporary artists. Next, they visited the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) to take in the contemporary art on display there. These art students reported feeling very inspired and energized by the encounter.
Next, middle school students successfully dodged the rain storms on their field trip to visit first the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea (MNAC) in Chiado, where they took in the collection´s survey of 19th century and Modern Art of Portugal, then visited the fabulous collection of the Museu da Marioneta, where a global history of puppets and marionettes was on display. The small but richly diverse museum left students feeling excited to further elaborate the masks they are working on in class, and made for a enriching day of off site learning.
