On May 13, students from the Elementary and Secondary Ecolution Clubs went on a field trip to Ribeira de Colares as part of the European project Plastic Pirates. This European Citizen Science initiative engages school groups in collecting samples of macro- and microplastics from rivers and streams, documenting their findings, and contributing the data to scientific research. The information gathered is later analyzed by scientists and researchers to help assess the condition of European waterways and the impact of plastic pollution.
The collaboration between younger and older students during the activity was truly inspiring. The high school students demonstrated remarkable patience, care, and leadership, enthusiastically guiding their elementary peers through each task. Their support not only ensured the smooth execution of the event but also fostered a warm and encouraging atmosphere for learning and exploration.
