Student Wellbeing and Child Protection

Student Wellbeing is at the Heart of our Mission

We are committed to nurturing the whole child - academically, socially, and emotionally - within a caring and connected school community. We believe that students thrive academically when they feel safe, supported, and known. Our wellbeing framework is inclusive, proactive, and grounded in respect for each student’s individuality, culture, and experience.

Inclusive education is a cornerstone of life at CAISL. We strive to create a learning environment where every student feels valued, respected, and supported.

Our approach to wellbeing is guided by the belief that diversity strengthens our community and that empathy and belonging are essential to student growth. We actively foster a school culture in which students feel confident expressing themselves, building relationships, and seeking support when needed.

Child Protection

Schools fill a special role in society as protectors of children and must ensure that all children in their care are afforded a safe and secure environment in which to grow and develop, both in and out of school. Educators, having the opportunity to observe and interact with children over time, are in a unique position to identify children who need help and protection.

CAISL seeks to be a safe haven for students who may be experiencing abuse or neglect in any aspect of their lives.

As part of this commitment, CAISL will ensure that this policy is communicated to the entire school community through clear, accessible channels. Staff members will receive annual training to strengthen their ability to effectively recognize and respond to child protection concerns.  Additionally, CAISL will implement hiring practices which safeguard children, and will review the policy annually for compliance and effectiveness.

Counseling and Emotional Support

CAISL offers a comprehensive counseling program designed to support students from Early Childhood through Grade 12. Counselors focus on students’ personal, social, academic, and global development.

Counselors work closely with teachers and families to provide developmentally appropriate, preventative, and responsive support. The program follows recognized ethical and professional guidelines and is designed to help students develop resilience, self-awareness, and emotional wellbeing.

Through counseling, students are supported in:

  • Building healthy coping strategies and self-care practices

  • Navigating social relationships and personal challenges

  • Appreciating individual differences and advocating for others

  • Developing confidence, adaptability, and global citizenship

Grades 6-12 Advisory

Every student at CAISL is paired with an advisor who meets with them regularly in extended advisory sessions. Advisory provides students with a consistent, trusted adult who supports their academic progress, emotional wellbeing, and personal development.

Advisors help students:

  • Set goals and reflect on progress

  • Develop organizational and study skills

  • Build interpersonal skills and healthy relationships

  • Navigate social or emotional challenges

When additional support is needed, advisors collaborate closely with the counseling team to ensure students receive timely care.

PSHE

Personnal, Social and Health Education Class for Elementary Students

Personal, Social, and Health Education (PSHE) is an integral part of student life at CAISL. Led by school counselors and supported by staff across divisions, PSHE helps students develop the skills and awareness needed to manage their wellbeing, relationships, and decision-making.

The curriculum is age-appropriate and evolves as students grow, supporting emotional literacy, social responsibility, and personal development. In the upper grades, PSHE also includes guidance related to future pathways and life beyond school.

Hidden Curriculum

Character education extends beyond formal lessons. Through daily interactions, classroom experiences, counseling sessions, and school-wide initiatives, students learn the values that shape a respectful and caring community.

This “hidden curriculum” emphasizes qualities such as empathy, integrity, responsibility, and respect. While not formally assessed, these values are intentionally modeled and reinforced, preparing students to become compassionate, ethical, and engaged global citizens.

Student Voice and Mentorship

We believe that students play an important role in shaping a supportive school culture. Through student-led initiatives, learners are empowered to care for one another, develop leadership skills, and contribute positively to the community.
Peer Mentors support elements of student wellbeing by helping facilitate discussions and activities related to topics such as motivation, stress management, digital balance, diversity, and healthy relationships. These students serve as positive role models while strengthening peer connections across the school.
