Commencement Ceremony 2017
Posted 06/07/2017 11:55AM

This Saturday, June 3rd, CAISL's senior class of 48 members celebrated its graduation in a heartwarming ceremony.

After the entrance of the seniors and the Anthems, Mr. Francisco Duarte Lopes, Ambassador-Designate of Portugal to the UN and Director-General of Foreign Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and this year's keynote speaker, addressed the seniors and told them how all of them could make the world a better place. This year's Valedictorian, Francisca M., followed with a speech about what value is and how it is found in our lives and relationship with others. Seniors also had a chance to show their musical talent: Joshua P. played a classical piece on the piano; and, as a class, with João C. on the guitar, the whole class sang "Better Together".

But the most important part of the Commencement Ceremony is the Presentation of Diplomas, being the High School Diploma an official certification of achievement and recognition of the students' accomplishments. The American system of education, which leads to the American High School Diploma, validates independent thought, creativity, initiative, and leadership, as well as high academic achievement, which makes it unique. This makes Commencement a ceremony of great significance for students and all the school's community. A few seniors also received an award for their extraordinary work in a certain area: Francisca M. got the Valedictorian (given to the student who best represents CAISL's values and mission) and the Community Service awards, Nuno B. C. received the Fine Arts Award, Manuel A. the Portuguese Language and Literature Award. Duarte P. S. and Charlotte S. both received the Outstanding Athlete Award, having Charlotte also gotten the Top Scholar Award, together with João C. and Mónica S. S.. A big thank you to the American Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring the Community Service Award, and to the American Club for sponsoring the Língua and Literatura Portuguesa Award.

Just before officially presenting the class of 2017, Ms. Curtis addressed them one last time and talked about the value of doing small things in a great way, quoting Martin Luther King Jr. After a moving farewell speech, the now graduates joined their guests in the cafeteria for a celebratory reception, with a few tears, but many more smiles and thanks to those who accompanied them during these last years.

We thank all guests that joined us for this wonderful ceremony and our Graduation Choir and Orchestra for making it even more special.

Congratulations class of 2017 -the world is yours!
