PORTUGUESE AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

If your child is going into Middle School (Grades 6, 7, and 8) or High School (Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12), he or she might need to take a Portuguese as a Foreign Language Placement Test before the start of school in September. The purpose of the test is to determine the most appropriate level of Portuguese as a Foreign Language for your child.

Please read these instructions carefully to see if your son/daughter needs to take the test.

Your child DOES NOT need to take the test if he or she:

1. Has never studied or spoken Portuguese.
2. Has always studied Portuguese as a Native Language (with a maximum interruption of 3 years). In this case, your child will take a Portuguese Native Language Placement Test at school in September.

Your child DOES need to take the test if any of the following apply:

1. At least one parent is Portuguese and the child sometimes speaks in Portuguese at home.
2. He/she has Portuguese speaking relatives who they visit often or spend vacations with.
3. He/she has lived in a Portuguese speaking country for at least a year and has studied Portuguese as a Foreign Language.
4. He/she is Portuguese or from a Portuguese speaking country, but has studied in Portuguese for less than 5 years.

› My child does need to take the test. What should I do now?

1. Please download and print off the correct test from the bottom of the page.
2. Ask your child to complete the test.
   • Make sure their name and grade number is written on the front page.
   • The test should be handwritten (not done on the computer).
   • Please make sure that answers are clearly written.
   • He/she should not use a dictionary.
   • There is no time limit - take all the time needed.
3. Please mail the test to the CAISL Admissions Office. Alternatively, the test can be scanned in and emailed, provided the quality of the scan is sufficiently good for it to be easily read. If possible, please return tests to us before 14th August.
