PTO Picnic Welcomes Everyone to the New School Year
Over 300 students, faculty, family members and friends celebrated the start of the 2009-2010 school year at the annual PTO Welcome Back Picnic on Saturday, September 26. Under sunny, windless skies everyone was treated to a fantastic afternoon of food, fun and games. The Varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball and volleyball teams took on faculty and alumni in four well-played matches; children jumped rope, walked on stilts, played tennis, soccer and took coloring breaks in the Children’s Game area; and parents and family members gathered around the picnic tables to catch up with old friends and meet newcomers. With hamburgers, hotdogs and donations of side dishes, ice cream, and a cake auction, there was plenty of food to enjoy! A BIG THANK YOU to the following people and groups for your role in making this year’s picnic a success. Thank you to everyone who donated a dessert, salad, side dish, or cake for the cake auction. Your contributions were much appreciated (and delicious)! Thank you to the PTO volunteers for their time and energy with EVERYTHING—planning, set up, cooking, serving, decorating and cleaning up: Claudia Khan, Manuela Tapadinhas, Eugenia Gamboa, João Fragoso, Vera Assis Teixeira, Isabel Resina Almeida, Helena Real, Oscar Gundim Maria Guimarães, Gabriela Cohen Freeman, Marina Starte, Maria do Carmo Moreira, Verena Benedict, João Rapazote, Rui Freitas, Vasco Graça, Lali Talaya Manso and Tomas Lopez Martinez. Thank you to faculty memebers Mr. Baker, Ms. Nicole, Ms. Tamen, Ms. Najar and Ms. Ana Maria for volunteering their time and energy, and to Joe Frank and the NHS students for monitoring the children’s game area. A special thank you to NHS member Tiago Franco for putting in a very long day to help with the games, sound system, and many other odds and ends! Thank you to Mr. Mollet for setting up the sounds system, and to Ms. Dawn and the Art Club students for producing colorful, picnic-themed posters to publicize the event. Thanks, as well, to Coaches Gus Ferreira, Hugo de Brito, Joao Marques, Dulcinio Vasconcelos and David Price for organizing (and even playing in) the sports’ games, as well as to all the teachers and students – past and present – who turned out for some quality matches. Mr. Chapman even sacrificed his ankle to the cause! Thank you to the event’s sponsors - Loja da Quintinha for providing the hamburger at a significant discount, and to Finzi Contini for their generous donation of gourmet ice cream. What a treat! Lastly, thank you to the guards, cleaning ladies, and maintenance crew who helped to make the event run smoothly for everyone. Here’s to the 2009-2010 school year – we’re off to a great start!
