French Class Visits Local Charcuterie

French Cooking

On the 22nd of October, 2008 the High School French 4 class - made up of six 10th graders: Ana Carolina, Christiana, Azinete, Leonor, Marta, and Sadik, along with Madame Keller visited the “Charcuterie Française” in Linhó and had professional lessons in French cooking. Below are two write ups - one in English and one in French - about the tasty trip.

When we arrived, one of our professional cooking teachers, Antoine, gave us a tour of the “charcuterie” and took us to the place where we would make the dream-meal - the kitchen. The young cooks immediately dressed like professional chefs with their aprons, gloves, plastic protection for shoes, and hats. The hygienic part was taken care of and we were ready for cooking action!

First, we washed our vegetables including carrots, tomatoes and others. Then we cut the vegetables into smaller pieces and mixed them together. Obviously, there were some tears while cutting onions, always a fun part in the kitchen. However, don’t be mistaken; fun was always to be had and was captured by the numerous flashes from Madame Keller’s camera. For starters, we made small pizzas of tomato and goat cheese. Afterwards, for the main dish, we made Lasagna. However, Christiana is a vegetarian so luckily for her she had her own Lasagna. Lastly, we made strawberry pies, a great favorite among the students. After the cooking, we got down to the eating and we realized the hard work had paid off. The students were delighted with the fantastic meals they had prepared for themselves and some decided they would have to repeat at home. In order to do that, the recipes were needed, and because the food was so good we decided to share one of the recipes as well:

Small Pizza of Tomato and Goat Cheese

·         1 Tomato

·         Goat Cheese

·         Batter

·         Oregano

·         Tomato concentrate

The students all agreed it was an extraordinary experience that they would surely enjoy repeating next year if possible.

What students said:

Leonor: It was really cool!

Christiana: It is my favorite type of food and I got to learn how to cook it!

Azinete: It was an incredibly pleasant activity where we learned how to cook amazing French dishes!

Sadik: I liked the electric door, I felt like I was in a James Bond movie!

In the end, one of the cooks was very kind and gave us a present in the shape of a gift bag containing a great chocolate croissant, a “saucisson”, and a Menu from the “charcuterie.” Take the opportunity to go to this place and try the finest French cuisine. Tell your parents and friends and visit the “Charcuterie Française” and we are sure you will have a wonderful experience.
