American Presidential Candidates Square off at CAISL
The excitement of the 2008 US presidential election campaign has spread to CAISL where, on Thursday, October 16, the students staged a mock presidential debate. CAISL students Tania "Obama" Dias and Carlos "MCain" de Mello, both Grade 12, squared off against eachother in front of a student audience and presented their positions on issues ranging from the economy and health care to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Student moderator, Carolina Rangel de Lima, posed six pre-selected questions and then took ‘live’ questions from the student audience. The candidates answered the questions, professionally, thoughtfully and in character, and even got in a few verbal jabs on their opponent as well!
Following the debate, students and faculty were invited to vote. And the results are. . . . 63% for Obama/Tania Dias and 37% for McCain/Carlos de Mello. Congratulations to both Carlos and Tania, and thank you to the HS Student Council for sponsoring the debate. Will the results be the same November 4???
Antena 3 public radio coverage of the debate is available in the audio file below.
